Established in partnership with The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen, the Primasia International Eye Research Institute (PIERI) is the Foundation's most ambitious commitment to date — a named research institute dedicated to advancing ophthalmic science across Asia.

Scope

PIERI brings together clinicians, researchers and students within CUHK-Shenzhen's broader medical sciences ecosystem. The Institute's work spans fundamental vision research, translational ophthalmology and the training of the next generation of clinician-scientists.

Senior leadership


Prof. Dennis S. C. Lam (林順潮), recipient of the 2022 International Council of Ophthalmology G.O.H. Naumann Award for Leadership in Global Eye Care, is the senior PIERI-affiliated investigator. The PIERI research community also includes Drs Nishant V. Radke, Chaoyang Zhang, Tingyu Wang, Liang Wen and Jingfa Zhang.

Research focus


PIERI's published work spans retinal disease — including polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy and Coats disease — surgical guidelines for macular hole, and the prevention and management of post-surgical infections (bacterial and fungal endophthalmitis). PIERI authors have contributed to international consensus guidelines convened by the Asia-Pacific Vitreo-retina Society and partner societies.
